Global price rise

International Specialty Products Inc. (ISP) will increase global prices for polymers, vinyl monomers, emollients, emulsifiers, preservatives, UV filters, and encapsulates from 5% to 7% effective July 1, 2010, or as contracts allow.

Barrier recovery aided

AAK has launched Lipex Cellect, a natural skin therapy ingredient with a high content of vegetable-derived phytosterol esters, which accelerate the barrier recovery of aged and sensitive skin, restoring a more youthful and healthy appearance.

New ingredient company

UK-based Oat Cosmetics launched in June 2010 to provide a new source of active natural cosmetic ingredients to the cosmetics and personal care industry. It will focus on fully traceable products from renewable resources and is working in partnership with Canadian biotech company Ceapro Inc., which since its start up in 1997 has achieved a reputation as an innovative formulator and advanced processor of active ingredients, botanical extracts and therapeutic products.

Three natural surfactants

The Lubrizol Corporation’s Noveon Consumer Specialties business has announced the development of three new vegetable derived surfactants for use in formulations requiring “natural” claims.

Technical talk a success

The Society of Cosmetic Scientists Singapore (SCSS) organised its first technical talk on 29 April 2010 at the Singapore Management University School of Economics & Social Sciences. This technical talk highlighted Singapore’s quest to grow its economy through A*STAR, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.

Green product line extended

Colonial Chemical has added Cola Fax PME (INCI: Potassium C12-14 Alkyl Phosphate) to its “green” line of personal care products. Cola Fax PME is a high-purity monoalkyl phosphate naturally derived from sustainable coconut raw materials.

Deal to create multifunctional molecules

The HallStar Company and SurfaTech Corporation have formed a cooperative development agreement to create and market new multifunctional molecules for personal care formulations.

APG facility opens in China

Global specialty chemicals supplier Cognis recently opened a new state-of-the-art production facility for alkyl polyglucoside (APG) surfactants at its site in Jinshan, China. The company also signed the Responsible Care Charter there.

Open registration to 2nd SPIM - November 2010

UV alliance announced

ISP, a major supplier of UV absorbers to the personal care industry, recently announced a manufacturing alliance with Vivimed Labs, of Hyderabad, India.

First organic certified algae ingredient

Lessonia has announced its Laminaria raw material has received organic certification with ECOCERT. This is the first cosmetic product available produced with organic certified seaweeds.

Surfactant company acquisition for Rhodia

Rhodia has announced the acquisition of Chinese amine and surfactant company, Feixiang Chemicals. Headquartered in Zhangjiagang near Shanghai, Feixiang Chemicals is one of the country's leading producers of specialty amines and surfactants, and employs 650 people.

Sustainable emollient launched

The business line Care Specialties of Evonik is introducing Tegosoft OER, a vegetable-based, enzymatically produced ester that not only imparts a caring, smooth, non-oily skin feel, but is also easy to formulate. The product can be incorporated into both oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) systems, and is suitable for colour-sensitive cosmetic formulations.

Cognis to sell all shares to BASF

Cognis Holding Luxembourg S.à r.l., controlled by Permira Funds, GS Capital Partners and SV Life Sciences, signed a sale and purchase agreement to sell 100 percent of the shares in Cognis Holding GmbH to BASF SE on June 22.

HBA strengthens European presence

HBA Global has appointed Emanuela (Ema) Treneva as its new international sales director. Based in Paris, Ms Treneva will provide sales outreach and customer support to European beauty and personal care suppliers.

Director of hair care announced

Dr Anand Mahadeshwar has joined ISP as director, global hair care R&D applications and personal care consumer science. A multiple patent recipient who has led product development efforts at global marketing firms such as Unilever and Beiersdorf, Dr Mahadeshwar has overseen numerous projects in laundry detergent and hair care technology.

Natural targets collagen

Italian company, IRB, launched their new Stems G product, Gardenia jasminoides, at in-cosmetics Paris in April. Gardenia jasminoides, also simply known as gardenia or Cape jasmine, is a shrub of the Rubiaceae family which is native to China and Asia and widely spread in Europe as a fragrant and ornamental plant.

Innovation prize for skin firmer

The BSB European Innovation prize for cosmetics 2010 was awarded in Paris during the incosmetics show. DSM Nutritional Products won the third prize with Syn-Hycan, in the category “Naturals/Actives”.
