Achim Daub, a member of the Symrise executive board, and global president – scent & care, opened the new Perfumery School in Holzminden on 16 May 2011. Five talented young people are beginning their training as perfumers in this environment.
The fragrance of lilies of the valley, roses, hyacinths and many more lingers in the air. Many scents blend together in a perfumery laboratory. Telling all of these apart requires one thing above all: many years of training. However, only a few schools exist where students can train as perfumers. Symrise AG in Holzminden not only operates one such school – it is now giving its school a space of its own. Achim Daub opened the new facilities for talented young students in a formal ceremony, creating two training areas dedicated exclusively to the next generation of perfumers. One of these areas will provide students with a theoretical grounding in perfumery: besides studying some 2,500 ingredients, students here will also have to learn how to create complex fragrance compositions, how individual fragrances interact and how to incorporate them into various applications. In the second area, the young perfumers will concentrate on the practical component of their training. Here they will have to learn how to recognise individual raw materials by their fragrance and single them out in fragrance compositions. The curriculum for the young fragrance students will cover raw materials, basic fragrance harmonies, fragrance families, classic fine fragrances and increasingly complex harmonies.
