Might it be possible to merge these apparently diverging paths into a global trend? Are the apparently reductionist ideas of EBC compatible with the allegedly holistic approach of TCM, possibly within a new framework of hedonistic concepts?
ABSTRACT
This paper is an essay and a review based on the idea that the two apparently completely different approaches to treating medicinal and/or cosmetic problems in or on the human body, namely ‘Evidence Based Cosmetics (EBC)’ of the West and ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)’ (including Beauty Care) can find common ground, especially in the field of using biologically active peptides. After briefly reviewing the basis of EBC and TCM, the paper presents a number of examples of interest to cosmetic research in the domain of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antalgic and antimicrobial activities, where both TCM and EBC can be used as starting points for developing new ingredients and resulting benefits.
