The 4th Silab Days event took place on 19-20 June in Brive, France, and was presented under the heading ‘Water, Source of Innovation in Cosmetics’. At the opening of the conference, Silab R&D director, Brigitte Closs- Gonthier announced that 140 people from 22 nationalities were in attendance and that 2014 is also the year Silab celebrates its 30th birthday.
The conference’s introductory speaker was Pascal Boyer, sales director of the International Office for Water, and his talk was an extremely lucid and thought- provoking examination of the need to preserve water.
The fact humans are 70% water is well known but it is important to remind ourselves of this when considering how dire the availability of usable water is in parts of the world. Our need for regular supplies of fresh water is critical, yet this need is so often not met with sufficient supply.
The statistics in Pascal Boyer’s talk were quite startling. Ninety- seven per cent of water on Earth is salty and this of course makes it undrinkable, along with many other uses. Although technology exists for de-salination, it is a relatively expensive process for companies, let alone individuals.
