Ban on testing debated at show

Some of the biggest challenges faced by the personal care industry will be among the issues tackled by in-cosmetics Barcelona in April.

The proposed ban on animal testing, due to take effect in 2013, and the technical hurdles to be overcome by the increased demand for green cosmetic formulations, will both be high on the agenda at the industry’s leading trade event as part of the Educational Programme.

The Scientific Seminars will consist of a number of presentations from key speakers, providing delegates with a concise and thorough overview of the topics. The 2012 Scientific Seminar programme includes insights into:

‘Spotlight on Sun Protection’

Taking place on 17 April between 14:00 – 18:00, the seminar will highlight the new single method used to determine SPF and UVA PF. Chaired by Alain Khaiat, Senior International Expert on Cosmetics with the European Commission, the World Bank and the UN-International Trade Center and featuring some of the world’s leading suncare scientists and professionals, the seminar will also provide opportunities to learn about the work being done by the International Standard Organization (ISO) on sunscreen. Delegates will also find out more about the latest sunscreen regulations in Europe, the USA and Asia. The seminar will conclude with an overview of the use of nano particles in sun protection.

‘Cosmetogenomics - At the Cutting Edge of Cosmetic Science’
Cosmetogenomics has received a great deal of media coverage recently.  Chaired by Marisa Meloni, CEO of Vitroscreen and Tiziana Mennini, and Editor at CEC Editore on 18 April between 09:30 – 13:00, the seminar will endeavour to shed light into one of the most fascinating aspects of personal care technology. Using insight from industry experts into the evolution of the science, the seminar will demonstrate just how Cosmetogenomics can be applied by cosmetologists.

‘Alternative (non-animal) Methods for Cosmetics Testing’
Regulations imposed by the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) in 2006 has led to an unprecedented need for alternatives to animal testing in Europe. Organised in partnership with TeknoScienze Srl, this seminar will take place on 18 April from 14:00 – 18:00 and will look at these state of the art alternatives, featuring input from the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) and the Centre for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT-EU), as well as industry insight from CeeTox and AgenoLab. Delegates will learn more about the likelihood of the ban’s deadline being met as well as details on the processes that will make it possible.

Aside from the Scientific Seminars, a Formulation Workshop will bring a practical experience to the educational line-up:

‘Green Formulations – Overcoming the Technical Hurdles’

Natural and organic cosmetic standards are gaining popularity, however the certification route is littered with technical hurdles. On 19 April between 09:30 – 13:00, Judi Beerling from Organic Monitor will highlight the major technical and formulation issues associated with such products whilst providing practical advice and solutions for cosmetics and ingredients companies. This workshop is designed for various target groups, including Cosmetic Manufacturers, Product Developers & Formulators and raw material and ingredient companies.

Judi Beerling commented: “The Educational Programme at in-cosmetics provides a combination of expert theoretical insight through the Scientific Seminars and interactive experiences through the Formulation Workshop. The level of expert insight gained by delegates attending the events is second to none and will equip businesses with the tools to effectively create and market the next successful personal care ingredient.”

The Scientific Seminars and Formulation Workshop take place on 17 – 19 April in Plano Salas Hall Europa 1.1 at Fira Barcelona. To register for just €260 per seminar, delegates should book before March 18 to save 10%.
