Roelmi HPC inaugurates biotech business unit, plant in Italy

Roelmi HPC has established Roelmi Biotech, a business unit with a new production plant in Gerenzano, around 25km north-west of Milan, Italy.

Located within the Insubria BioPark in Gerenzano, the new production and research hub is dedicated to biofermentation and the circular economy.

The facility has been established with the goal of consolidating and integrating production capacity for higher quality standards, and adopting cutting-edge technologies with respect for the environment.

In this way, the company’s know-how in 'white biotechnologies' can evolve from laboratory research to an industrial production scale, it said.

This development has its roots in a journey that began in 2008, when Principium – a company merged with Roelmi HPC in 2017 - developed a fermentation method dedicated to hyaluronic acid metabolites.

The following year, the PrincipHYAL was launched, created with the innovative ‘Full Spectrum Hyaluronans’ technology, which generates a broad spectrum of molecular weights working in synergy, mirroring what naturally occurs in the skin.

This vision further expanded in 2010, when the same technological foundations were applied to the nutraceutical field, leading to the creation of ExceptionHYAL, a line of dietary supplement ingredients designed to support wellbeing.

“Today, with the establishment of Roelmi Biotech, this journey reaches a new milestone: a production and research hub entirely focused on fermentation and the circular economy,” said a spokeswoman.

“By transforming by-products of the Italian industry into new resources, improving production efficiency of selected key ingredients, and aiming to reduce environmental impact, the company seeks to contribute not only to people’s well-being but also to the health of the planet,” she added.

Eleonora Santus, general manager of Roelmi Biotech, said: “The opening of this facility is a source of great pride for us.

“It represents a strategic step that strengthens our market presence, enhances the local area, and reaffirms our commitment to sustainable and responsible production.”
