USDA bio certification for DuPont

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products has revealed that its renewably sourced Zemea propanediol has been reviewed and certified by the USDA as a 100% biobased ingredient. Companies seeking to develop biobased formulations can be confident that Zemea will add to the overall biobased content of their products.

Zemea is a natural ingredient developed for use in cosmetics, personal care and home cleaning products. It is a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based glycols where the product’s lack of skin irritation, improved moisturisation and sensorial attributes are benefits. The USDA approval adds to the growing list of independent certifications for Zemea, which has also been recognised by ECOCERT and the Natural Products Association as an ingredient of natural origin. “We are excited that Zemea is now a part of the Biobased Labeling programme. This label will help our customers and downstream consumers easily recognise products that are made with biobased ingredients,” said Joe DeSalvo, marketing director, DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. Zemea has been successfully formulated into over 500 cosmetics and personal care products across the globe. “In addition to its biobased content, the Zemea manufacturing process delivers excellent environmental performance resulting in a lower energy usage and less greenhouse gas emissions when compared to its petroleum equivalent,” added DeSalvo. Under the USDA’s BioPreferred programme, biobased products are defined as those composed wholly or significantly of agricultural ingredients.
