New UV technology for the water phase

Do you want to create a high performance SPF, UVA-PF suncare formulation with the best sensory properties possible? Today's consumers want both high protection and a formulation that feels great on the skin.

Most UV filters are either oils, or have to be dissolved in polar emollients. Highly loaded oil phases lead to lower cosmetic elegance and sub-optimal performance. Joanne Johnson, business manager for Cornelius Group Plc (the distributor for BASF Personal Care in the UK and Ireland) said to Personal Care Europe: "Tinosorb S Aqua allows formulators to bring the most efficient oil soluble, broad spectrum UV filter into the water phase. With all the outstanding properties of the original Tinosorb S: excellent photo-stability, high contribution to SPF and UVA-PF at low concentrations and excellent tox profile, Tinosorb  S Aqua allows to optimise the sunscreen performance through improved filter dispersion, and create the best sun protection products possible". It offers:

• High SPF and UV PF performance.
• Lower oil phase = excellent sensory properties.
• Excellent photo stability for long lasting protection.
• Outstanding stabilisation of photo-unstable UV filters .
• Improved filter distribution.
• No negative influence on water resistance.
• No skin whitening.
• Increased formulation flexibility.

The formulators can also use BASF's Sunscreen Simulator to test the products in-silico before expensive in vitro or in vivo testing. The Sunscreen Simulator from BASF is an invaluable tool, helping to calculate the SPF of prototype formulations with two UV sources and at different application amounts.
