Removing the doubt: the UK’s first Soil Association-approved cosmetics ingredients

The Soil Association has launched a new scheme approving the first cosmetic ingredients for use in organic formulations, making it easier for formulators to develop natural and organic products.

Cornelius has been working closely with Lonza Inc and Soil Association Certification to explore and develop the idea of an approved list of materials which would be accessible to formulators and developers, thus considerably speeding and simplifying the selection of materials for products to be certified to the Soil Association standards. Joanne Johnson, Cornelius business manager, told Personal Care Europe: "We are delighted to be the first supplier in the UK cosmetics industry to have achieved the Soil Association’s formal approval; we at Cornelius are committed to working with our suppliers and customers to the benefit of the wider cosmetics community." The newly approved range includes preservatives (Geogard 111A, Geogard 221, Geogard Ultra), polyglycerol esters (the Polyaldo range), and natural multifunctional ingredients. These products are also permitted by Ecocert.

Joanne Johnson also reiterated that the extensive portfolio of natural and organic ingredients (Ecocert and organic-certified, cold process, naturally derived etc) available from Cornelius allows the company to offer solutions for any product against a backdrop where organic ingredients are becoming increasingly popular.

Among recent innovations are the Vegerite vegetable-derived series of products from Strahl & Pitsch, claimed to be “100% natural”, and specifically developed to offer an efficient alternative to petroleum hydrocarbon-derived Ozokerite wax. Another US-based manufacturer, JEEN, whose ingredients are distributed in the UK and Poland by Cornelius, has developed what it dubs “a revolutionary way to incorporate wax in cold process formulas”. The JEESPERSE® CPW series of products are wax / gellant optimised powders that, when introduced into room temperature water, with simple agitation form stable emulsions that impart “exceptional suspension, emulsification, and stability” to creams and lotions. Various natural waxes and synthetic waxes with medium to high melt points can be incorporated using the new JEESPERSE ® CPW technology.
