The story of Peruvian murderers selling their victims’ fat onto the European cosmetics industry for thousands of dollars has turned out to be a hoax.
Coverage of the story which led people to believe that police in Peru had arrested four people on suspicion of murdering up to 60 people for their fat and tissue, was front page news on many international websites and newspapers in late November last year. However, Felix Murga, one of Peru’s top investigators who announced the story to press, has now been discredited and is currently suspended from duty. One theory suggests the fabrication was intended to draw attention away from the police’s inability to control crime in the region.
