Beauty and wellbeing promoted naturally

Cognis Care Chemicals and its active ingredients business Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS) will both be contributing to the debate around this year’s IFSCC (International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists) Conference theme of “world wide wellness”. The companies will be giving presentations at the event in Florence, Italy in September, on skin and hair care technologies and concepts which meet consumer demand for natural products that promote beauty and wellbeing and combat ageing.

Care products that combine a pleasurable texture and scent with the associated benefits of nutritive food products are becoming more popular. At the IFSCC, Cognis will be showcasing a new emulsifier based on sucrose polystearate. These emulsifiers of natural origin have long been used in the food industry, but they also facilitate the creation of cosmetic formulations that feel very pleasant on the skin. Now the company provides a sucrose polystearate which in addition to offering these sensory benefits also helps improve efficacy. The trend toward personal care products with value-added ingredients shows no sign of slowing down. Thus Cognis contributes with a care surfactant that delivers the moisturising benefits of fruit derivatives and yet is far milder than traditional surfactants. These qualities make it suitable for personal care and baby care formulations such as shampoos and body/facial washes. Because of its 100% active state, it can also be used in non-aqueous formulations such as shower and bath oils. For the growing mens market, LS will exhibit an innovative active ingredient based on an extract of Indian kino tree bark, which reduces glycation and thereby helps to prevent ageing of the scalp, slows hair loss and allows hair to keep a youthful appearance. Preventing skin ageing is another issue that is increasingly important to consumers, and this is forcing manufacturers to look for natural ingredients that can help them achieve this. One of LS’s poster presentations will feature a natural and highly effective anti-wrinkle ingredient derived from yeast. This acts on the dermo-epidermal junction (DEJ) to improve the cohesion between the layers of the skin, strengthening and firming its overall structure.
