Lotus corniculatus extract to inhibit lipogenesis

Jaka Biotech reveals the findings of a study that indicates the topical use of a Lotus corniculatus seed extract yields clinical benefits in reducing sebum production and enhancing skin pore appearance for individuals with oily skin

ABSTRACT

The increasing popularity of botanical ingredients in skincare and haircare is attributed to their efficacy and natural origins. However, limited research has focused on the synthesis and secretion of sebum. This study aims to explore the novel composition of Lotus corniculatus seed extract (Smopore LC) and its inhibitory effects on lipogenesis in SZ95 sebocytes. Topical application of Smopore LC resulted in an immediate and long-lasting reduction in sebum content and sebum area on Chinese oily skin, achieved by downregulating sebaceous lipogenesis through the LA and DHT pathway. Smopore LC shows promise as a new botanical ingredient for oily skin.

In recent years, excess oil secretion on the skin surface has become a more and more common skin problem with the acceleration of the pace of life. Oily skin is frequently accompanied by large pores, and contributes to the development of acne.1 The sebaceous glands are an important organ for synthesizing lipids and an important source of sebum for oily skin.2,3
