Symrise funds school in earthquake zone

China is one of the most important markets for Symrise, and to help relieve some of the far-reaching consequences of the catastrophic earthquake in the country, the company has funded a school in cooperation with China Youth and Development Fund (CYDF), a Chinese non-governmental organisation.

“China is more than just one of our most important markets – it’s much more than that,” said Thomas Dressler, regional president, Scent & Care, Asia Pacific, regarding Symrise’s involvement in Sichuan. “Our clients and all of the people here have always been extremely accommodating and have treated us with openness and respect. Now we have a chance to give something back.”

Reconstruction and/or building temporary schools is one of the critical projects in the region. The executive board has donated a total of e50,000 – an amount that will help ensure that a new school is rapidly built. This “Symrise School of Hope,” which will offer 20 classrooms and space for 500 students, will be used for some two to five years until Chinese authorities have built official new school buildings.

  • Another fundraising drive, among Symrise employees in China, Singapore and Indonesia, has doubled the amount it has raised – to a total of e13,000 – thanks to dollar-for-dollar matching contributions from company management. This money will go to Project Hope Disaster Relief, which provides local support for victims and survivors of the earthquake. This aid project is also being coordinated by CYDF.
