Benefits of naturally-derived ingredients in sunscreens

Naturally-derived ingredients that are as multifunctional as their synthetic counterparts are not easy to find.

This article will discuss both a jojoba-derived ingredient and a macadamia-derived ingredient that provide aesthetic benefits and functionality to sunscreen formulations, and improve the dispersion of organic and inorganic sunscreens within said formulations.

Floraesters K-20W® Jojoba [INCI: Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters (and) Water (Aqua)] is derived from Simmondsia chinensis(jojoba) seed oil, and has been used in a variety of cosmetic and personal care applications from leave-on to rinse-off products, in both skin care and hair care products. The proven benefits within sunscreen formulations include water resistance and skin hydration.  Floramac® 10 (INCI: Ethyl Macadamiate) is also widely used within cosmetic and personal care products; and has been proven to disperse and solubilise sunscreens, as well as provide skin hydration and a dry emolliency similar to that of silicones. Both ingredients permit the use of oil-free claims.
