Algae are present in most aquatic environments as they are the basis of trophic networks. Like tropical forests known for their biodiversity, ‘algae forests’ shelter an impressive number of species from other algae to animals. Despite the fundamental role played by algae, they remain much less well known than terrestrial plants which are easily accessible.
In the past few decades microalgae have been of growing interest in various fields such as cosmetics, pharmacy, food and bioenergies, yet macroalgae has stayed relatively unexploited despite the large number of species available.
