Sun care aids demand for skin whitening

A recent study conducted by L’Oréal India has given weight to the position that one of the most effective ways of achieving and maintaining a lighter complexion is to regularly use sun care products.

The study, ‘New insights into skin pigmentation – an Indian perspective’, sought the views of 900 dermatologists across India in order to better understand the concerns and issues faced by Indian consumers, as well as their approach to sun care.

The findings of the survey were that 94% of dermatologists recommended a regular sun protection regime to fight the effects of skin ageing and pigmentation. Seventy-two per cent of dermatologists recommended broad spectrum sunscreens to offer protection against UVA and UVB rays, while a similar percentage claimed to recommend SPF30+ and two to three applications per day.

L’Oréal India’s director of research and innovation, Francois Pradier, said: “L’Oréal has been involved in photo protection research for over thirty years. Our study, ’New insights into skin pigmentation – an Indian perspective’ reflects this focus. Acute as well as chronic sun exposure can induce clinical and biological damage to the skin such as photo ageing, pigmentation, sunburn etc. Sunscreens with well-balanced UVA/UVB protection provide the best protection against skin damage.”
