When it comes to active ingredients, there are only two ways to go: either the molecule is from synthesis; or it has a natural source. More than a trend in today’s cosmetic industry, natural actives have become a necessity.
Therefore, sources of natural actives and natural molecules are a key field of research. In the 1990s, about 80% of the known natural products were from plant origin.1 More specifically, each year, a large proportion of newly described molecular structures are from higher plants.
