Sustainability is one of the megatrends in personal care and cosmetics and it applies to cosmetic consumer products as well as to cosmetic raw materials. According to the standard definition of sustainability, cosmetic raw materials should meet today’s needs without compromising (e.g. due to the process of their production) the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Another major topic for personal care applications is the protection against UV radiation which becomes evident by an increasing number of cosmetic products with a high sun protection factor (SPF) being launched. Therefore, formulation development has become more challenging as increasing amounts of UV filters have to be incorporated in order to achieve high sun protection factors. Here, the ability to stabilise such demanding ingredients is a key feature for cosmetic raw materials, especially for emulsifiers, and it is particularly important when it comes to low-viscous systems such as sprays, which are used more and more due to their convenience and easy application. Another trend which can be observed is the demand for multifunctionality, meaning an emulsifier should provide benefits in addition to excellent emulsion stabilisation. Here, moisturisation is of particular interest for skin care and sun care products: according to our own market research done in 2012/2013, one quarter of the globally launched sun care products claim moisturisation/hydration benefits.
A suitable technology platform for the development of an emulsifier which meets all these current market trends and needs are polyglyceryl esters. This can be demonstrated by various studies using the new and unique emulsifier Tego Care PBS 6 (INCI: Polyglyceryl-6 Stearate (and) Polyglyceryl-6 Behenate) which combines all these market requirements in one sustainable cosmetic ingredient.
