The market segment ‘natural cosmetics’ still shows strong growth in the personal care market all over the world. Nowadays, consumers are increasingly showing high expectation for personal care products.
To date, the classic hair conditioner segment is still lacking real natural solutions to meet consumer needs in this area.
The demand for high performance natural hair care conditioners can now be fulfilled by Plantaquat NC – a novel innovative conditioner base developed by BASF. It consists solely of renewable and biodegradable raw materials and serves the trend NeoGreen – natural-based hair care with no compromise on performance.
In this paper, a comprehensive hair conditioning performance evaluation including salon hair tests was carried out and the result showed that Plantaquat NC offers very good conditioning, volume and hair breakage protection on the level of market benchmarks. The deposition and distribution of active substance, i.e. lecithin on treated hair was characterised by using ToF-SIMS (Time-to-flight of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) imaging. Furthermore, Inverse Gas Chromatography was utilised to confirm that the deposition of Plantaquat NC onto hair partially recovers the hair hydrophobicity by increasing the Disperse Surface Energy to a level similar to hair treated with cetrimonium chloride.
