SymTriol is an innovative new ingredient for use in cosmetics made by international fragrances and flavourings manufacturer Symrise. The multifunctional substance works as a moisturiser, a fragrance, and as an antimicrobial agent.
It can be used in a wide range of cosmetic products such as gels, creams and lotions. SymTriol is a synergistic, patent-pending blend of 1,2-octanediol, 1,2-hexanediol and methylbenzyl alcohol. 1,2-octanediol and 1,2-hexanediol are moisturisers with broad spectrum antimicrobial activity. Methylbenzyl alcohol is a nature-identical compound that is used in perfumes. It also has antifungal effects which enhance the antimicrobial properties of the 1,2-alkanediol blend. SymTriol thus allows manufacturers to reduce the amount of preservatives such as parabens and formaldehyde donors. SymTriol (INCI: Caprylyl glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, methylbenzyl alcohol) is a clear, nearly colourless liquid which is soluble in cosmetic esters, glycols and ethanol, and it is compatible with most raw materials. The new ingredient is stable at a pH value of 3 to 8 and has excellent temperature stability. If desired, its faint odour can easily be masked by other fragrances. The recommended dosage of SymTriol is 0.5% to 1.0%.
