Givaudan Active Beauty has launching [N.A.S.] Rosemary 01, which it calls “a functional cosmetic ingredient that challenges butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) by outperforming its efficacy in a natural and organic way”.  This is based on rosemary that is sourced sustainably, mainly from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and processed by green fractionation.

According to Givaudan, the new ingredient has been shown via a mixture of botanical observation, DNA analysis, HPTLC and HPLC measurement to offer pure and natural claims. It also offers superior antioxidant benefits, while protecting botanical oils and stabilising colours.

The company cited tests in which [N.A.S.] Rosemary 01 demonstrated higher efficacy on aggressive temperature and light exposure conditions, thus showing that it is:

  • 2.3 and 3.3 times more efficient as an antioxidant than BHT and BHA respectively
  • Able to protect an oil-soluble colouring agent in MCT more than two times better than BHT and a synthetic competitor
  • Able to protect water-soluble colouring agents in emulsion more than two times better than BHT and synthetic tocopherols
