Cargill has opened a $150 million pectin production facility, its fourth in total. This is located at Bebedouro in Brazil’s citrus-growing region, from where the company will be able to source fresh fruit peels to make its complete range of HM brand pectins.
The investment makes Cargill the second largest pectin producer in the world, with a presence on two continents. Its existing plants are in France, Germany and Italy. Initial shipments are expected to take place before the end of the year.
Although pectin is mainly used as a texturising ingredient for gelling and thickening in jams, fruit-flavoured beverages, acidic dairy drinks, yogurts, fruit preparations and confectionery, it also finds applications in personal care for the same reasons.
The new facility has been designed in line with the firm’s commitments to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across its operations, using advanced technology to reduce its environmental footprint, such as being powered by biomass- and biogas-derived energy. This also includes sustainability certification of raw materials.
