A new vitamin E derivative, sodium dl-α-tocopheryl phosphate (INCI: sodium tocopheryl phosphate), is a water-soluble powder. Thanks to its water-soluble property, sodium tocopheryl phosphate can deeply penetrate the skin compared with other oily tocopherol derivatives and be formulated with water-based cosmetic products.
In addition to the primary potential of vitamin E, sodium tocopheryl phosphate has novel and powerful efficacies against signs of ageing around the eyes, such as dark circles, fine lines, and dryness. For people who are troubled by their dark circles, but only conceal them with makeup, sodium tocopheryl phosphate provides a good opportunity to improve brown eye circles and discover clear younger skin around the eyes because of its scientifically proven efficacy
The eyes are the windows to the soul – and even to your age! A survey, conducted with 455 women in their 20s to 60s, indicated that many women feel their age and can determine others’ age just by looking at eyes with dark circles, fine lines, and huge bags (Fig 1). In this survey, women in their 20s to 40s complained that the worst problem with respect to their eye areas was the dark circles. In another survey, interestingly, even men were bothered by eye fatigue and skin darkness under the eyes in all ages (10s to 50s).
Dark circles around the eyes are a major cosmetic problem, which are usually characterised by skin pigmentation and/or hemodynamic congestion.1,2 It is reportedly caused by a variety of conditions, such as infection, inflammation, allergies, and lifestyle factors. More than 70% of those who are troubled by dark circles thought that the main causes were lack of sleep, fatigue, and stresses in daily life.2 Recently, along with the popularisation of digital devices such as smart phones, tablets, and personal computers (PCs), people are frequently exposed to digital blue light that induces oxidative stress3 and inflammation,4 which result in dryness and formation of fine lines in the skin around eyes. This indicates that working in front of PCs for a long time can lead not only to eye fatigue but also induce signs of ageing in the eye area, such as dark circles, dryness, and fine lines.
