The personal care industry is on an eternal quest to discover things that are considered ‘new’. There is a constant state of churn, with different aspects of formulations targeted for change at different times.
BRB Silicones, a business unit of BRB International BV, is a producer of specialty silicones. Personal Caremagazine spoke to Grégoire Amice, BRB’s global product line manager for Personal Care, to find out his views on how silicones are aiding product development and ingredient discovery.
Personal Care: How has silicone technology developed in recent years?
Grégoire Amice: You should visualise the silicones chemistry as a Lego box where we are continuously discovering new possibilities. We are nowadays far away from the basic first silicones used 50 years ago in the personal care industry. Through grafting different functional molecules to the silicone backbone, we are presently bringing performant ingredients on the market, allowing formulators to develop innovative personal care formulations. At present, we have multifunctional silicones available, which easy to use and effective at very low levels in the formulation but are achieve performances and formulations not attainable until recently. Finally, we are expanding with new silicone ingredients available the pallet of benefits linked to silicones for the formulators.
