Choosing the right natural exfoliating ingredient

Cosmetic scrub products are made from exfoliating particles which use a mechanical action to scrub the skin. The exfoliating ingredients are small abrasive grains of calibrated size. Several types of raw materials can be used. The characteristics of the exfoliating particles vary according to the origin of the raw material.

As a result of the environmental problems caused by plastic particles, cosmetic brands are increasingly focusing their research on the use of exfoliating particles from natural sources. The formulation of exfoliating scrubs becomes more complex when natural particles are used due to possible interactions with the product itself. Formulators must take several factors into account when selecting a suitable ingredient for their project such as colour, abrasiveness, particle size and shape, suspension properties, plus compatibility and stability with the chosen formula. The marketing aspect and regulatory data also have to be taken into consideration.

A wide range of exfoliants meet market requirements. Exfoliants made from fruit kernels and shells are inert, effective and give a natural touch. Mineral-based products are highly abrasive and are used for specific purposes. Coloured luffas, generally used in transparent products, bring a touch of colour. Flower petals or leaves produce original formulations with a guaranteed decorative effect. Exfoliants made from fruits, spices or seeds provide a variety of colours, texture and perfumes which are good for market differentiation.

To sum up, several technologies aiming to replace polyethylene particles (PE) with neutral products are available on the market. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, but only cellulose acetate technology is totally satisfactory as a replacement for PE.
