As scientists one of our key tasks is effectively communicating with not just our peers, who may understand a technical article but, more importantly, with the public. The key element in effective communication is understanding what is said and more importantly still, what is meant. (I will no longer use the term effective communication - just communication - if it is not effective then it is just a lot of sound in the same way that muzak is background noise, sometimes soothing - when we can doze off in the presentation - or annoying - in the way that makes us feel angry at the intrusion.)
