Unlike past conferences, ASCS 2007, the 8th Conference of the Asian Societies of Cosmetic Scientists, offers delegates a unique opportunity.
A panel of experts will run a series of workshops on day three, with well-known figures such as Dr Alain Khaiat (Seers Consulting), David Steinberg (Steinberg & Associates, Inc.), Dr Johann Wiechers (Uniqema) and Gavin Greenoak (Australian Photobiology Testing Facility) taking part. Delegates will benefit from personal interactions and networking as they break out in smaller groups to discuss challenges and solutions for Asian skin.
Topics to be addressed include:
Asian regulations
US and EU regulations
Measurement and claims
Sunscreen testing
Dr Yoshimaru Kumano, the current president of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) has set a challenge for all delegates, scientists and researchers: “The realisation of a beautiful and young looking skin, even under the strong sunlight and very dry climate of Asia.”
Dr Alain Khaiat – Asian regulations
Dr Alain Khaiat, the founder of Seers Consulting and an expert in the field of naturals, cosmetic safety and regulation, has played a key role in formulating the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive which takes effect in 2008.
The advisor on cosmetic safety to the ever-vigilant Singapore health authorities, Dr Khaiat will deal with the challenges and opportunities that the harmonised regulatory environment poses. The senior expert on post-marketing surveillance, product safety, product efficacy evaluation and GMP for EU, Dr Khaiat will also be conducting a keynote presentation discussing potential benefits, risks and issues in the use of botanical extracts, with perspectives on compliance with the progressing and dynamic ethical, efficacy and standardisation guidelines across the continents.
David Steinberg – US and EU regulations
David Steinberg, the author of four books, not to mention countless papers, chapters and magazine columns, is a leading authority on legislation and regulatory affairs.
The founder of Steinberg & Associates Inc will conduct the workshop “US and EU regulations”.
A former president of the US Society of Cosmetic Chemists, Dr Steinberg will be featuring the significant changes in the two diverse models of regulations such as the 7th Amendment going into effect in the EU, the US changes in registration and new Californian laws. The presentation will review the highlights of all these changes and their implications for cosmetic formulations and marketing claims.
This workshop will be extremely useful as the Asian model of regulations and legislation is based largely on the European model.
Dr Johann Wiechers – Measurements and claims
Dr Johann Wiechers is the next IFSCC president chair for the IFSCC Conference in Amsterdam in 2007. He will be providing ASCS 2007 with a workshop “Measurements and claims” and a keynote speech “Asian beauty is more than skin deep, but how deep is Asian skin?”
Dr Wiechers has done extensive research with regard to maximising the efficacy of active ingredients, dermal drug delivery, cosmetic claim substantiation, skin bioengineering techniques and sensory testing. To date he has published more than 200 papers, book chapters, columns, presentations and posters, and is an extremely sought-after speaker at scientific and commercial conferences around the world.
He will review the various methods of measurements used to substantiate the efficacy of products in order to justify label claims in his workshop.
His approach promises to be highly informative and exciting.
In his keynote presentation, Dr Wiechers will also be sharing the recent research in ingredients that offers the stratum corneum optimal resilience and protection by the empowering active molecules in a cosmetic formulation.
Gavin Greenoak – Sunscreen testing
Gavin Greenoak, the founder of the Australian Photobiology Testing Facility at the University of Sydney, has 21 years’ experience in skin, skin cancer, and sunscreen research and has commercially tested sunscreens for 17 years.
The president of the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists will conduct the workshop “Sunscreen testing”, addressing substantiation issues with regard to sunscreens, from both in vivo and in vitro methods of evaluating the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) to the deliverable results and their meanings.
