Formulating for Instant Effects: ingredient review

In the age of the ‘selfie’, instant effects are being demanded by consumers more than ever before.

 With advances in active ingredients and impressive efficacy data, instant effects are not just limited to concealment or masking, they can include active changes to the skin.

The aim of this article is to explore the types of instant effects that are growing in popularity, and discuss examples of ingredients that are available. The descriptive wording associated with each ingredient mentioned in this article is taken from the respective manufacturers’ marketing information, and any INCI information displayed is only for the major compounds in each featured ingredient. There are other instant effects not covered by this article, such as colour change and pigmentation. Some interesting colour-changing beads (i.e. releasing a colour or colour-change upon application) now exist from various commercial sources, including some designed to instantly brighten the skin by delivering pigments.
