Responsibly addressing the social and environmental issues associated with palm oil (PO) and palm kernel oil (PKO) is a priority for Croda, a leading global speciality chemical company. They reportedly consider the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil’s (RSPO) Mass Balance system to be an important progressive step in supporting the palm oil physical supply chain and creating momentum towards segregated sustainable PO and PKO material.
Continually increasing their portfolio of certified sustainable palm oil derivative products, Croda currently offers many of the core ingredients used by personal care manufacturers, such as Cithrol, Brij, Span and Tween ranges among many others. Additionally, the incorporation of ‘SP’ into the product name clearly indicates to the buyer the responsibly sourced sustainable palm origin. By choosing to include SP ingredients in their formulation, consumer goods manufacturers will be able to demonstrate their proactive commitment to sustainable palm oil.
Croda has launched a new sustainable palm guide that contains a global list of all ingredients that will utilise Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) via the Mass Balance system in their certified sites, as well as regional lists of all products commercially available for sale today. Although 80% of palm oil produced is used within food production, there remains a responsibility within the personal care industry to drive the demand for sustainable palm oil.
In 2012, Croda began implementing the Mass Balance System into their manufacturing facilities and now have sites certified in Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the US. These certifications demonstrate Croda’s commitment to responsible sourcing of palm oil and palm kernel oil on a global scale.
It is Croda’s corporate target to have all of its manufacturing sites handling palm derivatives, in accordance with the RSPO, Supply Chain Certified by 2015 for Mass Balance (MBAL) production and has a schedule in place for RSPO audits of its remaining manufacturing sites. By 2017 Croda expect to only receive RSPO certified oil palm products.
