Tough palm oil questions at roundtable

GreenPalm, the sustainable palm oil certificate- trading programme, will be asking delegates to answer some difficult questions at the 12th Annual Roundtable Meeting on Sustainable Palm Oil (RT12). The questions will be posed via a display panel at GreenPalm’s exhibition booth during the conference in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia from 17-20 November 2014.

One of the questions GreenPalm will be asking is: ‘How do we stop sustainable palm oil becoming a niche?’

“While there is no doubt that things are progressing in the journey towards market transformation by the palm oil industry, there is clearly still a long way to go,” said Bob Norman of GreenPalm.

“Some of the issues we are facing are incredibly complex. There are difficulties communicating these complexities with stakeholders, never mind resolving them, but we can’t bury our heads in the sand, and RT12 presents the perfect opportunity for those that understand the problems to get their heads together.”

GreenPalm will be posing this question to RT12 attendees in a bid to help facilitate change around some of the key issues. Delegates will be asked to respond by sharing their knowledge, ideas and comments at an interactive exhibition stand at the conference.

Other questions posed by GreenPalm will include: ‘Will consumer buying behaviour drive demand?’, ‘Does physically traceable palm oil equal sustainable palm oil?’ and ‘Are all supply chains equal and if not, why?’

“If we can collectively find a way through these particular problems we have a chance of meeting sustainability objectives without excluding anyone,” says Bob
