Germany based Dr. Straetmans GmbH has won the BSB Innovation Prize in the category of functional ingredients at this year’s in-cosmetics in Barcelona. The members of the Jury from Henkel, La Prairie, Mibelle Cosmetics and Procter & Gamble highlighted the excellent performance of the natural ingredient.
After the successful launch of the natural anti-dandruff agent with clinically proven effect dermosoft decalact last year in Milan, the line has been completed with two further launches in Barcelona this year. dermosoft decalact deo is the first certified natural deodorant active that shows clinically proven 24-hours deodorant effect. The assessment was done in a clinical study with 20 individuals evaluated by an expert panel under controlled conditions. The sniff-test was done comparing to the well known, petrochemically derived ethylhexylglycerine as a benchmark. The duration of the deodorant formulation was evaluated after single use and after one week of daily use. In both cases dermosoft decalact deo showed 24-hours of deodorant effect which was superior to ethylhexylglycerine with only 6 hours duration. In-vitro testing against Corynebacterium xerosis that was performed prior to sniff-testing, already showed that the natural dermosoft decalact deo exhibits the same reduction of Corynebacterium xerosis as triclosane and ethylhexylglycerine.
The second launch this year was dermosoft decalact liquid that shows proven efficacy against germs causing acne, athlete’s foot or Candidosis. Thus, the natural dermosoft decalact liquid outperforms ingredients like climbazole or triclosan. The natural ingredient shows same or superior in-vitro performance in applications like anti-acne products, foot creams to prevent athlete’s foot or products for intimate hygiene. With the growing concern of the public opinion about many petrochemically derived ingredients (e.g. triclosane, climbazole), manufacturers are looking for natural alternatives that are as efficient as the synthetic ones but have a better image in the public. In many cases the equivalent efficacy cannot be proven for natural ingredients. In the case of dermosoft decalact liquid it has been shown in many in-vitro tests, showing excellent reductions of microorganisms that cause skin disorders like Candida albicans (intimate hygiene), Propionibacterium acnes (acne), Trichophyton spp. and Epidermophyton floccosum (athlete’s foot). The corresponding data is available upon request like the original studies showing the in-vivo reduction of dandruff and 24-hour deodorant effect. In addition to a positive image as a natural ingredient the raw materials of the dermosoft decalact family display an excellent toxicological profile, suitable for any kind of modern cosmetic concepts.
