Germany based Dr. Straetmans GmbH launched palm oil free glyceryl stearate citrate at this year’s in-cosmetic show in Milan.
The company, which has had a focus on cosmetic ingredients from sustainable resources for more than two decades, has established production of the widely used glyceryl stearate citrate based on palm oil free starting materials.
Dermofeel GSC (INCI: Glyceryl Sterate Citrate) has been known to cosmetics industry for many years. Many producers offer glyceryl stearate citrate under different brand names and qualities. The flexibility and excellent sensorial profile have made this emulsifier a widely used cosmetic ingredient throughout the world.
The sourcing of raw materials like the O/W-emulsifiers based on natural starting materials is increasingly raising concern about sustainability of the production methods. While petrochemical feedstock by definition is not sustainable (because it is not a re-growing resource) there is high hope in the sourcing and use of re-growing raw materials.
However, the intensive use and growing demand for natural ingredients has shown that also this is not free of criticism and has to be done in a careful and sustainable manner. Especially the production of palm oil based materials in high volumes has led to destruction of native rain forests in tropical countries in the past and as a consequence to the foundation of industry driven organisations (RSPO) that want to guarantee a protection of native forests and sustainable production of palm oil derivatives.
Since the concern about production methods persists with many people, there is a call for raw materials that unmistakeably are not sourced from palm oil. The launch of dermofeel GSC palm oil free is a step in this direction.
dermofeel GSC palm oil free not only uses 100% palm oil free resources but at the same time uses local vegetable feedstock to be processed in Europe. This guarantees supply of regrowing material from established agricultural areas and avoids long transportation routes for starting materials from south-east Asia to Europe.
dermofeel GSC palm oil free is based on rape seed oil and meets the specifications and qualities known in the industry for glyceryl stearate citrate. This raw material is in full accordance with all natural and organic standards but at the same time aims also to manufacturers of conventional cosmetics that want to position their brands using sustainable ingredients.
