SCS Formulate returned to the Ricoh Arena for a second time and once again built on the previous year’s visitor figures, indicating this event is showing no sign of slowing its expansion. Held on 9 and 10 November, the 2010 show delivered a generous range of new products and educational content, all within easy reach for most UK-based people.
The exhibition itself presented a comprehensive overview of the marketplace, with companies from mixing technology and colour testing as well as the full complement of ingredient suppliers.
On the Blagden Chemicals stand, Spanish company, Infinitec, promoted its HYB-ECM peptide for men’s skin care formulations. This peptide is key to the regeneration of the extracellular matrix, is a TGF-beta like peptide and has an impact on TEWL reduction. In tests it has shown efficacy in prevention of chronological ageing characteristics, prevention of photoageing as well as reduction of TEWL in men’s skin.
Kerfoot Oils promoted its range of cold pressed oils, including strawberry seed oil and flax seed, which are produced for the cosmetic, nutritional and food industries. These oils have their essential fatty acids and vitamins preserved and have a low peroxide value. It is a natural process, free from chemicals and is suitable for organic certification.
Process technology company, Ekato, believe its Viscoprop agitator is an answer to demanding process conditions, making it possible to combine previously separate process steps in a single vessel, which reduces cost. Factory manager, Brian Crouch, said: “We can achieve 100,000 tonnes per manufacturing year and remove much of the air that reduces bottling time. The new impellers are much smaller too, increasing access for removing the product and cleaning.”
Croda’s Crodafos HCE delivers hair dyes deep into the cortex in a very short space of time (as little as 10 minutes) which allows the colour to fully develop inside the hair shaft. This protects the dye from washing, improving the longevity of formulations.
Croda also promoted its new Emulsifier Selector tool. This online process works simply by choosing the essential characteristics of your emulsion system, i.e. emulsion type, viscosity, hot or cold process, and then highlighting any incompatibility or stability issues that arise due to ingredients such as alphahydroxy acids, sunscreens or urea. With a click of a mouse, a list is produced of emulsification systems that meet your requirements.
Cornelius’ Daniel Whitby was spreading the word regarding the company’s partnership with Lonza and the Soil Association. Cornelius has been working closely with both companies to explore and develop the idea of an approved list of materials which would be accessible to formulators and developers, thus considerably speeding and simplifying the selection of materials for products to be certified to the Soil Association standards.
The presentation by Karl Lintner of Kal’Idees was a highlight, and one that will surely have been the subject of many discussions afterwards. The title of the presentation was “Evidence-based Cosmetics – Old Hat or New Trend?” and Karl Lintner took aim at un-scientific approaches to claim substantiation and research, and even suggested that the term “cosmeceutical” should not be used. He was well aware that some of what he said could be seen in some quarters as provocative, but his argument was well constructed and extremely thought provoking, and it is an area that deserves consideration. More on this presentation will follow in the March issue of Personal Care Europe.
Conclusion
The 2010 SCS Formulate delivered on every level and is certainly an increasingly prominent date on the European, and even global calendar. It still has a sense of intimacy, and its compact scale allows visitors to ensure they meet everyone they need to, so in short, it has everything!
The next event will be on 15-16 November 2011 at the Ricoh Arena. http://www.scsformulate.co.uk/
