Dr Straetmans has sourced a natural cosmetic ingredient which is well known as a masking agent with excellent antimicrobial properties.
The company, which focuses on cosmetic ingredients from sustainable resources, with a particularly strong portfolio of antimicrobials, has managed to fill a gap for pH-independent alternative preservation of natural cosmetics with the sourcing of natural phenethyl alcohol. With Dermosoft PEA eco (INCI: Phenethyl Alcohol), the fast growing segment of natural cosmetics will now be able to benefit from innovative raw materials. The ingredient is derived from natural resources in a proprietary process accepted by certification bodies worldwide. The raw material is ECOCERT listed. Natural preservation is often built on essential oils, which may have changing qualities depending on the origin or date of harvest or extracting procedure. Unlike natural mixtures of essential oils, which are often employed in natural cosmetics for alternative preservation, Dermosoft PEA eco is a pure substance with reproducible and reliable efficacy. It is produced from a naturally occuring precursor found in trees of the Pandanus genus. Following an enzymatic process, pure natural phenthyl alcohol is yielded. Dermosoft PEA eco is used as a masking agent and fragrance component with an elegant rose-hyacinth-like odour. Due to its antimicrobial properties it can also preserve cosmetic formulations without using any traditional preservatives. Depending on the product concept a combination with other antimicrobial ingredients may be necessary. Since Dermosoft PEA eco has good water solubility it can be used for aqueous products as well as in emulsions.
