“ …[W]e want a “sustainable sustainability program.” Reasonable policy steps in the right direction. Changes to our operation we can maintain year after year and on which we can build... At Hallstar, sustainability is not a trend or a marketing campaign. It is about iterative improvement, continuous learning and doing what’s right day in and day out.”
- John J. Paro, Hallstar Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Hallstar’s roadmap for product development compels us to seek more sustainable product solutions. Rooted in the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry (Paul Anastas and John Warner, 1998)—a framework for making a greener chemical, process, or product—our “sustainable sustainability” requires holistic thinking and a creative approach.
Importantly, green chemistry does not prescribe only one path to development. Two of Hallstar Beauty’s newest ingredients – HallSens™ DIAS and UBI Oléoactif – are both sustainably produced and yet they are quite different from each other in terms of origin and application.
HallSens™ DIAS
Personal care manufacturers often seek emollients that are light and breathable, and that spread easily. Previously, these emollient needs have been satisfied by such silicone-based ingredients as cyclomethicones. However regulations and consumer perceptions limit their suitability, and until now the performance of silicone alternatives fall short of these benchmarks.
HallSensTM DIAS is demonstrably sustainable while also delivering unique and impactful sensory aesthetics. It is comprised of upcycled waste and prepared via esterification using renewable succinic acid (a green alternative to synthetically derived feedstocks) and isoamyl alcohol. The patent-pending ingredient can serve as a sensory alternative to cyclomethicone, and its light aesthetic properties exceed those of other low viscosity, highly spreadable oils and emollients. Its breathable and silky, smooth feeling generates a luxurious and memorable consumer experience across categories in personal care.
UBI Oléoactif®
While beauty inclusivity is widely discussed, many consumers still have difficulty finding products that suit their skin type. UBI Oléoactif® is an active ingredient designed to rejuvenate skin from within thanks to a new biological mechanism that acts on ubiquitin, a small protein found in all human cells. It has proven effects at molecular, cellular, tissue and clinical levels.
UBI Oléoactif® is designed with organic birch bark, harvested each year during spring from felled trees located in France. Each harvest of wood is carried out within a strict framework of sustainable forest management: trees are used as firewood while the bark is removed from the trees for use in herbal medicine, and there is no picking in protected areas. The molecules of interest present in the birch bark are extracted using a natural, non-toxic and environmentally friendly solvent. Finally, UBI Oléoactif® is produced by Hallstar’s patented and green Oléo-éco-extraction™ technology, a 100% physical process.
