Brenntag unwraps chemical carbon footprint calculator

German personal care ingredient distributor Brenntag has launched CO2Xplorer on-demand, an online customer service offering for calculating the carbon footprint of chemical products.

CO2Xplorer has been used by Brenntag internally to provide customers with comprehensive PCF data already since December 2022; CO2Xplorer on-demand is a new subscription service to be used directly by customers themselves.

CO2Xplorer was developed to allow companies to assess and manage their carbon footprint more effectively and calculate CO2e emissions across the entire supply chain, i.e. including transportation, warehousing, and packaging.

As the pressure to comply with environmental regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) increases, companies need reliable tools to ensure accurate carbon reporting.

CO2Xplorer on-demand is said to be an intuitive, cost-effective, web-based platform that helps companies stay compliant with the evolving requirements.

It enables users to calculate the environmental impact of their products based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, in compliance with ISO standard 14067:2018.

This tool offers a certified solution for calculating Scope 3 CO2e emissions enabling companies to make more informed and sustainable decisions without the need for complex databases or external consultancy services.

Ewout van Jarwaarde, CEO of Brenntag Essentials said: “This tool is an incredible asset for our customers across various industries. It not only helps reduce negative environmental impacts but also ensures compliance with sustainability regulations.

“By effectively supporting our customers in achieving their sustainability goals, we’re all contributing to a healthier planet. It’s a win-win for both businesses and the environment.”

The tool’s calculation methodology is certified by TÜV Rheinland Energy & Environment GmbH, a leading independent testing and certification body, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and trust.

The certification confirms that the Brenntag’s PCF methodology approach meets the requirements of the internationally recognized standard ISO 14067:2018 and the Together for Sustainability (TfS) PCF Guideline.

The CO2Xplorer was also recently awarded the ICIS Best Digital Innovation Award 2024.
