UK personal care ingredient maker Holiferm’s fermentation-derived sophorolipid biosurfactants HoliSurf LF and HoliSurf HF have passed MyMicrobiome’s certification standards for face and scalp.
Both products now carry the MyMicrobiome Standard "Microbiome-friendly" seal of quality, marking them as skin-friendly ingredients that help preserve and improve skin conditions.
Holiferm, a spin out from the University of Manchester, is due to upgrade annual production capacity at its Liverpool site to 3,500 metric tonnes by the end of the year and has funding to scale up to 15,000 tonnes.
The MyMicrobiome Standard assesses how cosmetic and personal care products affect the natural microorganisms found on a specific area of the skin.
A healthy balance of these microorganisms is crucial for skin health. For products to be considered skin-friendly, they must also be friendly to the microbiome, so as not to disrupt the natural balance of the user's skin.
The human microbiome varies greatly from person to person, but each area of the body has its own unique mix of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
The MyMicrobiome Standard evaluates how products impact the key microorganisms typical for each skin area, providing a standardised way to assess their effects.
