Symrise has taken the wraps off the tropolone-based SymDiol 68T multifunctional ingredient and SymOcide PT preservative blend.
Developed to improve the product protection system of cosmetic formulations, SymDiol 68T is multifunctional and antioxidant, helps to prevent the formation of yeast, bacteria, as well as mould and stabilizes emulsions.
It also possesses proven moisturizing properties and is said to work well in SymDiol 68T in skin, sun, hair, and personal care products as well as colour cosmetics.
SymOcide PT meanwhile offers an antioxidant and antimicrobial effect, acting against bacteria as well as fungi.
Therefore, conventional preservatives, such as formaldehyde donors, parabens and isothiazolinones, get less attractive and less used in modern product protection.
SymOcide PT is said to be suitable for skin, hair and personal care products, sun protection and colour cosmetics.
Both new ingredients are made with tropolone, which are an alternative to conventional product protection and works effectively to protect from primary and secondary free radicals and stabilizes organic compounds that prevent oxidation.
It also reduces protein oxygenation by 60% and the formation of peroxides in sunflower oil by 45%. Thanks to these properties tropolone supports the product protection system of formulations.
“Consumers are looking for safe, effective products. For this reason, we constantly work to better evaluate and understand our ingredients such as tropolone,” said Dr. Hannah Minges, global product manager at Symrise.
“Tropolone-based products have exceeded our expectations as it helps to improve the whole product protection system. We want now to draw the market's attention to these new options,” she added.
