Concept formulations feature microencapsulation technology

New concept formulations from Dow Corning, in alliance with Lipo Chemicals Inc., feature microencapsulation technology that combines the proven benefits of silicone with customised release to create distinctive formulations that engage the senses.

“By encapsulating a wide range of ingredients inside a protective ‘shell’, formulators can create unique, consumer-pleasing products that not only feel luxurious, but also have enticing fragrances and are visually distinctive,” said Todd Ostergaard, senior industry specialist, Dow Corning Beauty and Personal Care Products.

Combining microencapsulation with the benefits of silicone, formulators can create visual appeal, protect unstable cosmetic actives, sustain or customise release, and combine previously incompatible ingredients in one formulation.

The prototype formulations in the “Engage Your Senses” formulation kit are:

  • Soft Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner: Novel hair conditioner with a vanilla fragrance and splashes of temporary colour.
  • Peach Smoothie Body Scrub: Exfoliating body scrub infused with natural ingredients to rejuvenate and protect.
  • Cherry Silk Body Smoother: All-over body moisturiser that softens and nourishes the skin.
  • Mint Chocolate Foot Cream: Soothing relief for tired, aching feet.
  • Cool Cucumber After Shave Balm: After shaving balm that calms and soothes.
  • Sparkling Berry Styling Gel: Raspberry-scented, medium hold hair gel.

Dow Corning and Lipo Chemicals formed a marketing and technical alliance in 2006 to provide microencapsulation delivery system technologies to personal care and household care product formulators.
