Microbiome-supporting complexes

The FermBiotic series from BotanicalsPlus is described as “a brand new skin-wellness platform of microbiome-supporting fermented complexes derived from extracts and microorganisms”. It uses the firm’s Bio-Transmogrify technique to free up beneficial components for skin and scalp that may otherwise be trapped.

The complexes themselves are based on beneficial fungi or bacteria - Galactomyces Candidum, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae and Lactobacillus Plantarum – with fusions of extracts from legumes, marine botanicals, superfruits and adaptogens. Different claims are made for their activity based on studies conducted by BotanicalsPlus.

In an in vitro study, the company stated, Legume FermBiotic G. increased hyaluroniadase-1 expression by 71% in keratinocytes compared to untreated cells, helping the skin to hydrate itself from within. Similarly, an MTT assay proved that Marine FermBiotic L. stimulates both keratinocytes and fibroblasts by 21% compared to untreated cells, resulting in “stronger skin cell metabolism, improved skin cell turnover and a more radiant complexion”.

Superfruit FermBiotic G. has a HORAC EC50 test value – the amount of ingredient required to eliminate 50% of expressed reactive oxygen species– of 7.8 ug/ml compared to 300 for Trolox. This, Botanicals Plus said, shows “the antioxidant potency of the ferment”. Finally, Adaptogen FermBiotic S. has shown superior ability to increase Type I collagen expression in fibroblasts by 28% compared to untreated cells in in vitro cell studies.
