France’s Laboratoires Expanscience has launched a new organic illipe butter for skin and hair care applications. This is extracted from the seeds of the Shorea stenoptera tree nuts in the Indonesian part of Borneo, which have traditionally been used to moisturise the skin, and to heal sores and sunburns.
The seeds are sun-dried, pressed and filtered. Then, the crude illipe butter is refined, deodorised and decolourised in a certified organic refinery, so that it does not impact the colour and smell of cosmetic formulations. It is said to have a naturally balanced fatty acid composition and its high melting point makes it suitable for vegan formulations.
The raw material certified as 100% organic by Ecocert Greenlife according to COSMOS, while the supply chain is certified as Fair for Life by Ecocert.
