Numerous start-ups have emerged who prioritise sustainability above almost all the other traditional claims associated with the beauty and personal care industry. One company making waves is UKbased Beauty Kitchen, which was formed in 2014 by chemist, herbal botanist and sustainability expert Jo Chidley and her husband, Stuart. Beauty Kitchen sell lotions, scrubs, masks, cleansers, soap and shampoos, among other products. Many of the company’s products come in compostable pouches, printed with vegetable inks and made with containers that have been designed to be reused. They were the first UK high street beauty business to certify as a B-Corp in 2016 and as their website mission statement reveals: “We’re on a mission to create the most effective, natural and sustainable beauty products in the world.
Jo has won industry awards, including the ‘Who’s Who in Natural Beauty’ and business awards such as ‘Scale Up Entrepreneur of the Year’, and Personal Care spoke with Jo in November 2020 to find out more about her approach to sustainable beauty products.
