Multifunctional range combines cosmetic and antimicrobial activity

Focusing their efforts on natural product chemistry, Active Micro Technologies has combined cosmetic functionality with antimicrobial activity to develop a product range of multifunctional ingredients.

This sustainable, nature-based product line showcases aqueous, oil soluble, anhydrous and powder treatment materials that can reduce or eliminate the need for conventional preservatives.

Leucidal Liquid (Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate) is an antimicrobial active derived from fermented Leuconostoc kimchii cultured on a specific media supplemented with radish root. US Patent 10,159,708 describes this ferment filtrate as a method for treating acne, allowing cosmetic formulators to capitalise on the antimicrobial benefits of the material for upholding formula integrity as well as improving the condition of acne prone skin.

As a continuation to US Patent 10,159,708, US Patent Application 16/205,883 presents an anti-acne composition consisting of a fermented product derived from fermented Leuconostoc bacterium in the amount of 5% to 20%, water in the amount of 75% to 95%, and at least one of xanthan gum or an oil in water emulsifier blend in the amount of 2.5% to 10%. This pending application broadens the composition listed in US Patent 10,159,708 for greater IP coverage.

Lactic acid bacteria such as Leuconostoc kimchii produce novel antimicrobial peptides as a natural defence mechanism. These peptides, known as bacteriocins, are composed of a relatively short amino acid sequence (<50) that have an affinity for the microbial membranes and cell walls of competitive microbial species. Once the peptides have associated with the cell, they create pores that interfere with the cell’s ability to regulate the osmotic balance between itself and its external environment, eventually leading to cell death. Via an advanced fermentation technology, the peptide based active Leucidal Liquid is targeted to provide superior antimicrobial efficacy as well as promotion of commensal bacteria balance on the skin to help repair and prevent the visible signs of acne.
