Sunlight, artificial UV, pollution and stresses are all important factors that contribute to the inducement of skin pigmentation and skin dryness. Keratinocytes stressed by various stimuli send warning signals to melanocytes to protect skin cells, and despite protective mechanisms, this triggers melanogenesis and damages the skin’s natural barrier.
In the early stages of the melanogenesis process, the melanin index starts to increase while at the same time, the skin hydration index gradually declines. Returning to the baseline level of skin hydration takes a long time, although the melanin index takes even longer to return to baseline.
Prolonged exposure to these stimuli leads to: skin dryness, skin darkening, hyperpigmentation, age spots, sagging skin, dull skin, uneven skin texture, fine lines which ultimately become wrinkles.
Therefore, it is important for consumers to have products that enable them to lighten and moisturise the skin simultaneously in order to recover quickly and prevent the predicted unfavourable skin conditions.
