“He who knows others is clever, but he who knows himself is enlightened.”- Lao Tzu (taken from ‘365 Days of Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio).
Like Lao Tzu once said, getting a better understanding of yourself is important as it is a part of self-enlightenment. Getting a better understanding of yourself also means understanding what you really want or what kind of self-image your heart desires. Each one of us, regardless of our gender in society, must have some kind of self-image that we all wanted and to realise it, can be categorised as part of our overall happiness. In order to realise our own desire to fulfil our self-image that we really dreamed of, we often use cosmetic products or other beauty care to beautify ourselves. Now, there are so many advertisements that show instant beauty results for cosmetic or skin care products and those brands are not only targeting women, they also persuade a market for male consumers.
But still, nowadays, many men still consider skin care or any beauty products as part of their routine as a low priority, and some men even think buying these kinds of products for skin care can lead people or themselves into questioning their own virility; associating them with femininity. This kind of thought can be broken down by another fact found in the history of men’s skin care. Even in the past, there has been evidence about how men were using skin care to take a good care for themselves. For example, Egyptian men were using oils and creams as part of their skin care to protect them from the dry and sunny weather, while Roman men used barley flour and butter to treat pimples.
Commonly, men enjoy sport or outdoor activities more than women do, but the more harsh environments our skin is exposed to, the easier it is for our skin to have a problem because of the harmful environment. For example with sunlight exposure to our skin, some people might think it is natural and good for our skin to get exposed to the sun’s rays so our body can generate the production of vitamin D.
