Cleaning the skin is a must and a basic step of all skin care regimes, but especially of Korean beauty. In the K-beauty routine, cleaning is an essential point to thoroughly remove all the impurities from the skin due to makeup, dust or pollutants. The aim of this ancient routine is a healthy, glow and clear skin.
Dust, pollutants, heavy metals, and allergens among others are found in buildings or in the open air, causing oxidative stress that harms the skin, what is known as indoor and outdoor pollution. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the formation of oxidative free radicals and the antioxidant defense capacity of cells. An excess of free radicals affects and damages DNA, proteins, and lipids through several reactions like glycation and oxidation.1
Furthermore, metabolic reaction efficiency is impaired with age and continuously produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) as by-products leading to oxidative stress and inflammation which leads to further oxidant species. This could be named as internal pollution.1
Antioxidant substances are able to keep the skin clear of radical species that cause dark spots, hyperpigmentation, inflammation, dullness, and loss of elasticity. Green tea is traditionally known for its purifying and antioxidant properties and it is becoming increasingly popular in cosmetic products.1
