UV absorber for lasting protection

Oxonica, a leading UK nanotechnology company, has announced that its revolutionary active ingredient for sunscreens and cosmetics, Optisol, can provide the highest level of protection from UVA and UVB for more than eight hours, as demonstrated by a consistent 5 star (Ultra) rating performance using the Boots UVA star rating system. Many sunscreens, including major brand names, rapidly lose their effectiveness over time as the components are broken down by sunlight.

Optisol UV absorber is a specially modified form of titanium dioxide, which is traditionally used in many sunscreens to protect against UV. A small amount of manganese is incorporated into this patented product. The manganese acts as a free radical scavenger and also minimises the formation of new free radicals. Free radicals are created by UV light and are a major cause of skin ageing and damage.

The addition of manganese also changes the white colour of the titanium dioxide to a more natural skin colour tone. Consumers who have tried Optisol-based sunscreens have reported a “natural glow” effect when applied to the skin.

Oxonica points out that swimming, sweating, physical abrasion and so on will lead to the need to reapply sunscreens containing Optisol UV absorber.
