Surfers are the epitome of a cool, laid-back sporty style, and if we cannot be them, at least we can copy their hair which is loose, wavy, sun-streaked, and messy
In recent years hair styling products have become very popular that support an undone, matte, and wavy look using leave-on styling sprays, creams, or pastes with a non-glossy finish. These trendy products can contain some salt, are often unisex and smell like sand, salt, and endless summer. Matte hair styles are still trending worldwide but as hair oils are becoming so successful also the glossy finish is back. This is actually the natural sign of healthy hair which should have a soft texture and intact ends.
The world of hair styling products can be a confusing one, and oftentimes it can be overwhelming trying to understand what each one does. There is no consensus on the definition of a hair paste or a hair clay which are the types of formulations that often provide a matte to semi-matte finish and are the base for surfer style hair products. But both usually give a medium to very firm hold and can range from very thick to very creamy consistency. Hair clays are actually hair pastes containing an additional clay ingredient which is commonly bentonite. This is a completely natural clay and usually forms from weathering of volcanic ash. It is incredibly fine and powdery making it almost velvety to the touch, and can swell as much as 6x when in contact with water. Clay (bentonite) makes the hair feel fatter by adding body, thickness and structure to the individual hair strands, and ultimately gives structure and stability throughout the day.
Hair pastes are usually water-based which reduces costs and eases washing out. They often contain beeswax for a firm hold supporting the matte finish, providing great separation and flexibility. They are mainly used by men with slightly longer hair especially for accentuating particular areas and a flexible style. Ideally they give humidity resistance and are pliable. Successful brands with these types of products are TIGI, Paul Mitchell, American Crew and göt2be
