In May 2014 the Daily Mail1 and The Telegraph2 newspapers both reported on a product launched by Osmosis Skincare3 called Harmonized H20 UV Neutralizer.4 The product, a drink, is claimed by the company to provide skin protection against UVA and UVB rays and be an oral dose alternative to topical sun protection products.
How is it claimed to work?
Company founder Ben Johnson explains all: “If 2 mL [of the product] are ingested an hour before sun exposure, the frequencies that have been imprinted on water will vibrate on your skin in such a way as to cancel approximately 97% of the UVA and UVB rays before they even hit your skin. This results in coverage for approximately three hours. This is similar to the amount of UV reflection created by SPF 30 titanium/zinc sunblocks but distinctly better than UVB chemical sunscreens which prevent certain damage that leads to the visible/painful/ inflammation reaction we identify as sun damage.”5
So Osmosis Skincare claims to have developed a water technology with certain frequencies ‘imprinted’ that ‘vibrate’ on the skin providing the UVA and UVB protection. Additionally the special water somehow manages to get ‘onto’ the skin despite being consumed orally and then cancel out UV rays before they even hit the skin. It sounds too good to be true! Dr Rang Singh6 provided quotes used by both the Daily Mail and The Telegraph in response to the claims around the theoretical mode of action: “To say they have changed the frequency of water molecules, well I just don’t understand how they could have done that. Everything in our body vibrates at its own frequency anyway and, as far as I know, nobody has found a way to change that.” He also commented: “It’s just a gimmick,” and “I wouldn’t just take these claims with a pinch of salt, I would take them with a fistful.”
