Restoring skin’s vitality

One of the most important similarities between skin and muscles is that both need an adequate supply of oxygen if they are to produce energy effectively, points out Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS), the active ingredients business of Cognis Care Chemicals.

Energy production in muscles can be improved by physical exercise. To help ensure skin cells are properly oxygenated, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques has developed Oxygen Complex LS 9641.

This highly effective natural active ingredient helps the skin to optimise the use of oxygen, and restores its youthful vitality by increasing the cellular ATP level, an important indicator of cell metabolic rate.

Scientific research has shown that by the age of 30, the respiratory quotient in human skin cells is already starting to fall. Metabolic activity naturally decreases with age, but LS has found a way to stimulate it – Oxygen Complex LS 9641 a synergistic complex of a yeast extract, marine glycogen and a vitamin C derivative. This innovative product increases the oxygen consumption, thereby stimulating energy production in skin cells. However, when cells produce energy in aerobic conditions, there is a risk that potentially harmful Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) will be produced as a by-product.

For this reason, Oxygen Complex LS 9641 has been designed to control the release of ROS while facilitating energy production. As a result, it successfully counteracts the age-related decrease in metabolic activity, thereby restoring the skin’s youthful vitality. The new cosmetic active is suitable for products to reduce premature skin ageing and increase its natural vitality – for example in creams to improve skin tone, men’s skincare and sports products.

Tests on the new ingredient’s efficacy have demonstrated its capacity to stimulate the metabolic activity of human fibroblasts: both protein and ATP levels, which are reliable indicators of cell metabolism and vitality, are increased. The lactic acid level is reduced, proving the superior efficiency of aerobic over anaerobic energy production. Oxygen Complex LS 9641 also significantly increases the oxygen consumption of human fibroblasts – cells which play an important role in repairing damaged tissue. Research carried out by LS has also proven that the new active ingredient increases the cells’ oxygen consumption without any accompanying rise in ROS production.
